Heroin Health Alert
Wednesday, 14 March 2012 08:56

Heroin Health Alert

Dear colleagues

During last week at least four heroin users presented at Homerton A&E with symptoms of diarrhoea, abdominal pain and vomiting.  They were identified by the clinical nurse specialists working there, and following discussion with the Health Protection Unit it seems most likely that their symptoms were withdrawal related i.e., due to use of poor quality/weak batches of heroin, rather than chemical or bacterial contamination.

All services should be aware of the risks to users when there are significant changes in the quality of heroin used.  Reduced quality (strength) can lead to symptoms of withdrawal, and increased use.  The latter carries the risk of overdose if the strength subsequently increases.

Information on local drug services, including access to substitute methadone prescribing services, is available at http://www.hackneydaat.org.uk/local-services-partners.

Lifeline, the Community Drug Service run a drop-in where you can see someone without an appointment.  They are based at the Elizabeth Fry Centre in Tudor Grove, Hackney E9 7QL, Telephone 020 8985 3757.

Statement

Hackney Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) rules out cuts to Substance Misuse Charity

Contrary to claims by UNITE the Union, counselling and women and families’ services provided by national charity Lifeline will not be cut - there are no plans to reduce the service or to cut funding. These services are being redesigned to better meet customer demands by providing more staff and to allow better access and longer opening hours.

Since 2008, Hackney DAAT has invested heavily in the provision of modern treatment facilities to offer a comprehensive range of quiality services and easy access for all clients - especially women and families.

We've met with senior management at Lifeline and they've assured us that services will not be affected in the event of a strike. Lifeline are working with their staff to address concerns about the service redesign with a view to resolving these without recourse to industrial action.

Background

·         Lifeline is a national voluntary sector charity providing drug and alcohol treatment services for vulnerable clients in Hackney since 2008. See www.lifeline.org.uk

·         Hackney Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) is the partnership of the Local Authority, the East London NHS, the East London Foundation Trust Metropolitan Police, London Probation and a wide range of voluntary and community projects and organisations and service user representatives.
