The following documents are regarded as essential documents for all Hackney drug and alcohol professionals and others involved in their care.
National Drug Strategy The National Drug strategy, 'Drugs: protecting families and communities, 2008’ aims to restrict the supply of illegal drugs and reduce the demand for them. It focuses on protecting families and strengthening communities across four main strands of work. These include : • Protecting communities through robust enforcement to tackle drug supply, drug-related crime and anti-social behaviour • Preventing harm to children, young people and families affected by drug misuse • Delivering new approaches to drug treatment and social re-integration • Public information campaigns, communications and community engagement National Alcohol Strategy In 2004, the government published the ‘Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy for England’. This was a major milestone, as it was the first cross-government statement on the harm caused by alcohol, which included a shared analysis of the problem, and the programme of action to respond to the issue. In 2007, the follow-up document, ‘Safe, Sensible, Social: The Next Steps in the National Alcohol Strategy’ further outlines the government's strategy for tackling alcohol misuse and abuse.
Hackney Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy 2010 - 2014 In June 2007 HM Government launched the next steps in the alcohol strategy for England titled “Safe, Sensible, Social”. It states the case for developing a program of focused activity to meet long term goals to reduce the violence, antisocial behaviour and health harms associated with alcohol. It also recognises the important part that alcohol plays in the culture and economy of the country and gives guidance on promoting the sensible consumption of alcohol. The national strategy makes the interlinking nature of alcohol related problems clear and proposes that an effective solution will rely on the coordination of wide ranging stakeholders such as local communities, Police, NHS, alcohol industry, Local Authorities, media, and the wider business community, working in a multi-component partnership approach. Our ‘Hackney Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy 2010-2014’, which you can download below, sets out our ambitions and illustrates that we are committed to improving the life chances of Hackney’s population through a targeted programme of work, with our key partners, to address alcohol related harm in the Borough. Our commitments are set across 4 themed areas:
Theme 1: Alcohol related crime and anti-social behaviour Theme 2: Acute alcohol misuse and treatment
Theme 3: Protection of children and young people from harm
Theme 4: Encouraging behaviour change
We launched this document on the 28th May 2010, after consulting widely with professionals, service users, carers and the general public. Hackney Drugs Strategy 2008 - 2012 Local Authorities and partners have a statutory responsibility to develop an annual action plan to tackle drug misuse in their areas. The Hackney DAAT, ‘Achievement & Challenge: Tackling Drug Misuse in Hackney: A Strategy for 2008-2012’ provides a clear and concise context for Hackney’s annual action plans over the next few years. This document provides the direction and focus on what Hackney’s communities and partners need to do to tackle the complex issues around drug misuse locally. The Hackney DAAT Drug Strategy sets out local initiatives and targets against the requirements of the National Drug Strategy.
