DAAT Community Action Team

Team Profile, Latest Updates and Contact List

The Community Action Team works to improve access to drug and alcohol treatment services for all of Hackney's diverse communities and ensure these services are effective and appropriate. The team work closely with a wide range of community and voluntary organizations to run projects tackling drug and alcohol misuse in the heart of local communities.

The Hackney DAAT Family Support Officer works with families, friends, and partners of those affected by substance misuse, and will accept referrals both from treatment services and self-referrals. The service offers one-to-one support for at least six sessions before referring onwards if appropriate, as well as a regular drop-in. If you are a parent or carer who supports someone attending or thinking about attending one of Hackney’s drug and alcohol treatment services.

Naznin Ali - Family Support Officer at Hackney DAAT can offer much needed support and advice.
Naznin will be running a drop-in, a free and confidential space where those affected by a family member’s substance misuse can get advice and information on all aspects of drug and alcohol use.
Here people can also access acupuncture if required, have light refreshments and get the opportunity to meet other peers in a similar situation.

The family support ‘drop-in’ takes place every Tuesday between 5.30-7.30pm at
The New Hanbury Project, 3 Calvert Avenue, Shoreditch E2 7JP.

Latest Update

A10 Nationals and Street Drinking

The Community Action Manager has coordinated a preventative outreach response to reports of A10 national street drinkers in the Stamford Hill area. This has involved the DART, Thames Reach, Street Rescue, HAGA (Haringey Outreach Service, Social Action for Health, and St. Ignatius Church. The aim of this is to identify numbers of homeless A10 nationals in the NE of the borough and try to engage them into services in anticipation of expected increases in levels of street drinking as the weather improves, as well as in the run up to the implementation of the borough-wide DPPO later this year.

Social Action for Health

A DAAT funded project, Social Action for Health, has been working closely to engage A10 nationals (especially Poles) with alcohol needs into treatment. To this end the Polish Engagement Worker has been working closely with DART and other treatment staff to set up pre- and post- treatment groups for such clients.

Open Doors

Open Doors were awarded a small grant from the Home Office (£5k) for a project to improve reporting of sexual violence against street sex workers. This will be delivered in partnership with the Haven and MPS Sapphire Unit. Open Doors are also shortly due to start a specialist training programme, in conjunction with MPS, targeting first-time offenders charged with kerb-crawling.

BME Forum

The 5 projects funded as part of the BME Forum YP funding round are nearing completion.

Aftercare

The Shelter Support Officer has supported 35 clients to date into more stable housing, as well as delivering training for treatment staff and service users on housing rights, tenancy sustainment, and avoiding homelessness. In addition, he has completed research on housing needs of treatment clients, with over 75 respondents from 7 treatment services. This will enable treatment and housing services, particularly Supporting People providers, to meet clients’ housing needs more effectively. He has also been involved in the recruitment and induction of the new DIP Housing Practitioner, as well as contributing to the ongoing sectoral review of rough sleeper and single homeless provision in Hackney.

The new Employment, Training, and Education officer has been working with local employers, JobCentre Plus, and other stakeholders to set up work placement and training schemes for clients coming out of treatment. To this end, he has already secured two 13-week work placements for treatment clients with Hackney Community Transport and Carillion Construction, due to start in late spring. Partnerships are further being developed with Hackney Community College to allow treatment clients to access training around fitness, healthy eating, and catering; and the Learning Trust, with the aim of securing resources for a life skills training pilot for treatment clients.

Family Support

The DAAT Family Support Officer is providing support to 11 families caring for someone with a substance misuse problem. In addition she has been developing proposals for improved support for vulnerable families across a range of agencies, including CYPS, PCT, ELMHT, and the Learning Trust. She is also developing a carers’ drop-in for carers of stimulant users, in partnership with Blenheim CDP. The Family Support Worker, Rebecca Lee, is currently supporting 13 families/carers, as well as running a pilot carers’ surgery within the DIP service. She also has provided training on carers issues for participants in the YP BME Forum projects training.
